With the Air Jordan 17 Low SP “Black Patent”, Jordan Brand is once again shining a spotlight on one of Michael Jordan’s often-overlooked later signature silhouettes. The model is based on an original black colourway from 2002, but replaces the smooth leather used back then with a significantly glossier patent finish.

The upper remains almost entirely black. Patent leather dominates most of the construction, whilst perforated leather in the lacing area and textile inserts on the padded collar provide a touch of material variety. This ensures the trainer doesn’t look flat, despite the monochrome colourway.

Metallic silver details on the eyelets and other small elements provide contrast. Added to this is a slightly translucent, ice-blue outsole, which adds a surprisingly fresh touch to the otherwise very dark design. Overall, the look remains clean, high-quality and significantly closer to the early 2000s aesthetic than to classic retro Jordans from the 80s or 90s.

The release also ties in with Jordan Brand’s growing focus on later models such as the Air Jordan 14, 15, 16 and 17. Another black version of the AJ17 Low is set to appear later as part of a larger ‘Black Pack’, though that version will feature even more exclusive materials such as stingray leather.
