The 57/40 answers an intriguing but seemingly mundane question: what would happen if we modernised one of New Balance's iconic shoes - the 574? The original 574 was a unique design for its time, offering almost effortless versatility without relying on visible technical features. 

The 57/40 takes the hybrid concept a step further by exploring design developments from years past, providing an updated take on an iconic silhouette. A slimmer last creates a sleeker profile, while exaggerated features add visual interest. A unique midsole features a flared take on 574 construction with '90s tech details, while the mudguard showcases distinctive wavy embellishments from the '80s era.

The New Balance 57/40 'Rust Oxide Blue Groove' offers sharply contrasting hues on a modernised version of the vintage 574 silhouettes, built on a slimmer base and featuring exaggerated details. 

The upper features a royal blue textile base with rust-coloured suede overlays and an oversized 'N' logo of cracked brown leather. Lightweight cushioning comes from a stacked midsole in opposing orange and grey shades. Underfoot is a lightly speckled black rubber outsole featuring modified tread inspired by the road/trail pattern from the original.

New Balance’ latest offering is part of their All-Terrain Pack, which includes three 574s and black and grey editions. The uppers on an off-white nylon base feature an all-over branding pattern ideal for urban jungle treks. 

In addition to tan-quality suede overlays, a white-outlined "N" motif is behind the CORDURA branding tag. The tongue's top is embellished with a blush pink branding label, while a Hunter Green hue surrounds the heel cap. A chunky midsole continues this nominal hue with the Milk Chocolate Brown mould above, while black finishes off the heel counter and rubber outsole.
