Nike By You - Design Your Own Sneakers

Have you always wanted to design your own sneakers and then actually wear them? Thanks to ‘Nike By You’ (formerly NIKEiD), this is now really possible.

Let's get started.

What is ‘Nike By You’ (formerly NIKEiD)?

‘Nike By You is essentially Nike's customisation service for apparel and footwear.

You can customise Nike's most popular sneaker and apparel lines with colour schemes, lettering and, in some cases, logos to your own specifications and tastes.

Want a pair of football boots or trainers that match your team's outfit? No problem! Want all-black trainers? Everything is possible.

What can be customised?

‘Nike By You‘ (formerly NIKEiD) has always been pretty flexible in the range of things you can customise. Since the founding of NIKEiD, football and basketball shoes have always been at the start. Bags and accessories followed soon after.

In the meantime, Nike is constantly adding new items and sneakers to the NIKEiD programme. It is therefore not possible to provide an up-to-date list. It is best to check the options directly on the NIKEiD page.

NIKEiD is also aimed at the everyday athlete and offers customisation for runners such as the Air Pegasus, Free Run and Flyknit Air Max. So really a wide selection of sneakers.

Finally, NIKEiD tries to cater to the sneakerheads out there by offering them the opportunity to personalise some of Nike's most classic silhouettes. Models such as the Air Force 1, Dunk Low and Air Presto are all available, as well as Nike's most popular Air Max lines.

Nike By You (NikeID) Overview

How much can I customise with Nike By You?

Quite a lot! You can really do a lot. Every pair on offer can be customised in colours, patterns and materials.

Need an example? Let's take the Nike Dunk Low here.

Here you can customise the following options:

  • Base / Upper
    Heel area
    Mudguard
    Swooshes
    Lining
    Laces
    eyelets
    Midsole
    Outsole
    Text / Logo
However, you have to be careful with the texts, because Nike takes the liberty of simply rejecting some texts. That's obvious, because Nike doesn't want negative things to appear on the kicks. So avoid the following things and your text should go through:
  • No insults
    No discrimination
    No glorification of violence
    No brand names
    No names of celebrities
    No names of sports clubs
    No ‘adidas’ ;-)
Everything clear?

What does Nike By You cost?

Everything always costs money and time. Unfortunately, it's no different here. Each sneaker has individual prices, but you can assume that a Nike By You (NIKEiD) sneaker costs around 20 - 40 euros more than the normal model. But normal trainers are also boring.

The delivery time from Nike By You is usually around 4 weeks. We have tested the service for you and can confirm that this delivery time is correct. If Nike takes longer to deliver, this will be displayed in the shopping basket.

Nike By You Do's & Don'ts

So you can really customise your kicks extensively. But that doesn't mean you should do it. You can very quickly put your foot in it. Good thing you have us - we'll set you straight.

We'll make sure that you stand out because of your trainers and not because you look like an idiot. A mixture of the wrong materials and colours can completely ruin the perfect sneaker.

Do’s:

  • First of all, you should check which colours match each other. Here you can use sites like Adobe Colour Wheel. You'll find perfectly coordinated colourways there. Just use them. Really.
Not in the mood for colours? Then just keep it monotone. That can also look extremely stylish.
You shouldn't use any fragile materials either, otherwise you won't wear the trainers. That would be a shame, wouldn't it?
So to summarise: Normal materials that can take a bit of punishment and classic colourways that aren't too blatant.
But you want it to be bold and unreasonable? Then go for it! We're not your mum ;-) With Nike By You, you can / are allowed to be unreasonable.

Dont’s:

Okay, please follow this advice. Otherwise you'll just be laughed at. We don't want that.
  • Your name has NOTHING to do on your trainers! You're no longer little kids who have to have their name on their clothes, are you? Unfortunately, so many people do it wrong. But it's just ultra embarrassing. Do NOT have the name printed!
You shouldn't mix too many materials either, otherwise the trainers will quickly look overstuffed. As a rule of thumb, you shouldn't use more than two different materials for the upper. The following example shows a (in our opinion) miserable sneaker.
Only use sneaker models that you normally like and that you already own. It would be a shame if you design your perfect sneaker and end up not finding it comfortable at all. You should also know exactly what size you need.

Can you return Nike By You shoes?

Yep, quite simple actually.

Nike gives you 30 days to return the sneaker free of charge. That's pretty cool, considering that these trainers are made especially for you!

You will receive a free return label from Nike.

If your sneakers are older than 30 days and then break or the material fails, you can also send the sneakers to Nike. Nike will check the sneakers and try to send you a new pair. You can even send in sneakers that are already two years old! So that's really cool. However, you should always describe exactly what is wrong with the sneaker or where the problem is.

As a rule, Nike is very accommodating here.

Where are sneakers made that are designed through Nike By You?

Nike has over 146 different shoe factories spread across 14 different countries. However, most sneakers are made in Vietnam, China and Indonesia. Unfortunately, you don't know in advance where the sneaker is made. But you can check this as soon as you hold the sneaker in your hands, because the country of manufacture is always printed on the inside of the tongue.
