Latest Pickup: New Balance 1890 "Dark Silver Metallic" & "Boysenberry"

New Balance has just launched the 1890, a new silhouette that clearly signals the direction the brand is heading in: more visible technology, more structure, yet still suitable for everyday wear. With the "Boysenberry" and the "Dark Silver Metallic", two colourways are available straight away, each offering a completely different take on the model’s character.

The 1890 feels like a deliberate step forward. It’s not a classic retro runner, but a reimagined blend of familiar elements.

The base comes from the 890v3 upper, combined with the sole of the 2002 – a setup that used to be almost too elaborate, but now fits perfectly with the current tech trend. It is precisely this combination that gives the shoe its distinctive shape: dynamic and light at the top, solid and stable at the bottom.

The most striking feature is the curved overlays, which drape over the mesh like droplets. This gives the upper structure without looking overdone.

It is beneath the upper that the shoe’s true character lies. The ABZORB midsole runs the full length of the shoe and provides exactly the right amount of cushioning that you immediately notice in everyday wear.

The visible pods, in particular, not only add visual interest but also ensure a soft, controlled ride. The shoe offers good cushioning whilst remaining stable enough to wear all day.

Compared to flatter models, the 1890 feels significantly more technical, without veering too far into the performance category.

The "Dark Silver Metallic" colourway has a clear aesthetic: light mesh meets silver overlays, creating that classic Y2K runner look.

The various shades of silver add depth without being too loud. This is complemented by a dark suede heel section, which lends the shoe a touch of sophistication.

It’s the little details that make all the difference here: subtle pink ABZORB elements and blue branding accents add a touch of playfulness without detracting from the clean look.

It’s a completely different story with the "Boysenberry". Here, New Balance delves much deeper into the colour palette, creating a darker, almost moody vibe.

Shades of purple are paired with red accents to create greater contrast. The speckled sole adds a touch of character to the shoe without being over the top.

This makes the colourway look less clean-cut, but significantly more eye-catching and distinctive.

What works well with the 1890: the silhouette stays the same, but the overall look changes completely depending on the colours.

The "Dark Silver Metallic" is easy to wear day-to-day and goes with almost anything, whilst the "Boysenberry’" adds more energy and makes a bolder statement on the foot.

The shoe feels stable and comfortable right from the start. The cushioning is soft enough for long days, whilst the wide sole provides plenty of support.

Added to this is the upper, which fits the foot well thanks to its shape and doesn’t feel too heavy. Overall, it’s not a lightweight runner, but it’s just right for everyday wear.
