Angelo Baque and ASICS Celebrate Their Collaboration with New GEL-NYC Silhouette
Over the past decade, Queens-born designer Angelo Baque has made a name for himself with his creative work. He founded his own label Awake NY and collaborated with ASICS for several projects. Ahead of 2023, he announced his first signature silhouette GEL-NYC in collaboration with ASICS.
According to Baque's interview with Sneaker Freaker, the concept of this sneaker was inspired by various models from the past and combines elements of the GEL-Nimbus 3, GEL-MC Plus V, and GEL-Cumulus 16 with some new technologies. The product not only combines style elements that have never been seen before in history, but also pays homage to New York City.
"What inspired the first GEL-Kayano 5 360 inspired the GEL-NYC," Angelo Baque tells Sneaker Freaker. "At the end of the day, for me, it's about how do I imagine a kid from Jackson Heights, Queens, the South Bronx—or even the outer boroughs of Paris—wearing ASICS? We've gone back to the core of where we started with ASICS in 2019. No pun intended, but it was a complete 360 turn. It's essentially a badass shoe that you can wear in everyday life. It looks good with a suit and a tracksuit. It looks good on a date with your lady, you know what I mean? It's literally a return to the core of what I started with ASICS."
Limited Release of the Awake NY x ASICS GEL-NYC at Awake
Unfortunately, the drop of the sneakers is limited and will only be released in a few regions. The sneakers will be released at Awake NY's flagship store in New York in January 2023.
