The New Balance 1906 has long been one of the standout silhouettes in the current range – and with the 1906F, the model is now getting an exciting update. Rather than simply repeating existing designs, New Balance has gone a step further here, giving the classic retro runner a significantly more progressive, almost outdoor-inspired direction.
The foundation remains familiar: the 1906F is built on the tried-and-tested platform already seen in the 1906R, 2002R and 860v2. In practical terms, this means an mesh upper combined with synthetic overlays that provide structure and stability.

What stands out straight away, however, is the design. The upper looks much more technical, almost deconstructed. The overlays are sharper and more minimalist, giving the shoe a more angular, modern silhouette. Added to this is the redesigned lacing system, which is more commonly found on trail or outdoor models. For us, this is a detail that immediately sets the 1906F apart.

Colourway with energy
The 1906F clearly demonstrates just how versatile the silhouette is – in both the "Blue Bird" and "Punch Yellow" versions. Whilst "Blue Bird" features cool blue tones ranging from light to dark, complemented by aquamarine details, "Punch Yellow" takes a much bolder approach.

Here, a yellow-orange gradient runs from the upper down to the sole, lending the shoe a distinct sense of dynamism. The typical overlays have been replaced by triangular synthetic elements, which give the design an even more technical and angular look. Small contrasts, such as blue details on the tongue or trail-inspired features like pull-tabs, deliberately break up the warm colour scheme.
When it comes to the upper, everything remains as it is – and that’s just as well. The combination of ACTEVA LITE, N-ergy and ABZORB SBS delivers exactly what you’d expect from New Balance: comfortable, stable cushioning that makes itself felt straight away in everyday wear.

The shoe offers a smooth, responsive ride, provides support in the midfoot and remains comfortable even when worn for long periods. Added to this is its relatively low weight. For a technically advanced running shoe, the 1906F feels surprisingly light.

Why we love this trainer
What makes the 1906F special is its blend of the familiar and the new. You can tell straight away that the basic design works, but at the same time, the model has enough of its own identity to stand out from other 1906 versions.
It feels great on the foot straight away, sits securely and delivers exactly the comfort you’d expect from New Balance. Then there’s the look: technical, slightly edgy, yet still suitable for everyday wear.

Fit & Sizing
With the 1906F, you can generally choose your usual size with confidence. The trainer is true to size and fits the foot perfectly straight away. Thanks to the lightweight upper and flexible construction, the shoe moulds comfortably to your foot without causing any pressure points.

Compared to other New Balance models, the 1906F feels slightly structured but never restrictive. There’s plenty of room in the forefoot, whilst the midfoot is kept stable by the lacing system. For everyday wear, this strikes just the right balance between comfort and support.
Comparison: 1906F vs. 1906R & 2002R
When you compare the 1906F with well-known models such as the 1906R or the 2002R, you quickly notice the differences:
1906R: More classic in design, slightly cleaner in appearance, more firmly rooted in retro running
2002R: Slightly softer to wear, slightly chunkier and wider
1906F: More technical, more modern, with a stronger outdoor vibe and a more distinctive upper
