New Balance rounds off the Made in USA Spring/Summer 2026 season with a 990v4 that looks nothing like a classic grey runner. The ‘Urgent Red’ combines bold red, yellow details and blue accents, and has quickly earned itself the nickname ‘Bart Simpson’. Of course, this isn’t an official collaboration, but with this colour combination, the comparison is simply obvious.
The 990v4 isn’t usually one of the boldest models in the New Balance range. ‘Made in USA’ releases in particular often feature muted colours, high-quality materials and that classic premium runner look. The ‘Urgent Red’ is different.

The upper features bold red mesh and matching suede overlays, giving the shoe an instantly striking look. New Balance has also added yellowish accents to the toe box, the side panels and the heel area. It is precisely this mix of red, yellow and blue that creates the ‘Bart Simpson’ vibe, without the shoe needing any official branding.
The blue heel tab and the blue insert on the rear midsole add even more contrast. There’s also a black ‘N’ logo with a silver outline, which grounds the look somewhat and ensures the shoe doesn’t veer too far into the playful.

Classic 990v4 DNA beneath the colour scheme
As eye-catching as the colourway is, the base remains entirely 990v4. The silhouette was originally launched in 2016 and builds on the modernisation of the 990v3. So you still get that signature blend of running heritage, stability and ‘Made in the USA’ quality.

The material construction remains familiar too: a mesh base, complemented by suede overlays and synthetic accents. The finish looks high-quality, the fit is spot on, and despite the bold colours, you can immediately tell that this is a 990v4.
It is precisely this contrast that makes this release so exciting. A classic ‘Made in USA’ runner, but in a colour palette you don’t see from New Balance every day.

Comfort remains at 990 level
The 990v4 isn’t just about looks. The combination of ABZORB cushioning in the heel and forefoot, along with the ENCAP and C-CAP midsole, ensures a stable, comfortably cushioned running experience.
The shoe doesn’t feel excessively soft, but rather controlled and solid. That’s exactly what makes the 990v4 so great for everyday wear. You can wear it all day without any loss of comfort, whilst still getting plenty of support from the wide sole unit.

Added to this is an Ndurance outsole, which ensures extra durability. Especially with a €240 trainer, that’s a detail you’re happy to have.
Details that complete the look
As well as the eye-catching colour palette, the “Urgent Red” features a few small details that tie the shoe together neatly. The silver “Made in USA” tongue label complements the silver outline of the “N” logo nicely. The “990” branding on the heel remains understated, whilst the reflective accents catch the light and give the shoe a little more depth.

Another great feature is that New Balance includes white-and-grey laces as well as the colour-coordinated ones. With the red laces, the shoe looks even more cohesive and bold, whilst the lighter laces break up the look a little and complement the light-coloured midsole better.
With a colourway like this in particular, that makes a real difference. You can style the trainers for a more understated look or go all out with the full cartoon vibe.

We love the 990v4
The ‘Urgent Red’ is certainly not a 990v4 for everyone. But that’s exactly what makes it interesting. New Balance is showcasing a different side to its ‘Made in USA’ range here, releasing a colourway that stands out without compromising on the silhouette’s quality.
The shoe makes an immediate visual impact, yet remains wearable thanks to the classic 990v4 shape. This colourway probably works best with a pair of plain trousers, a white T-shirt or a simple hoodie, as the trainer itself already packs plenty of punch.

Conclusion The New Balance Made in USA 990v4 “Urgent Red”, also known as “Bart Simpson”, is one of the most eye-catching 990v4 releases of the season. Bold red, yellow highlights, blue accents and the classic Made in USA craftsmanship come together here in a silhouette that has been synonymous with comfort and quality for years.
Anyone who usually loves New Balance for its grey premium running shoes will find this takes a completely different direction. Louder, more colourful and much more playful, but still with genuine 990 DNA.
