It launches on 8 May for €130. With its first official Nike SB collaboration, South Carolina-based skate shop Bluetile has delivered a project with real meaning. The Nike SB Dunk Low “Monarch Butterfly” tells a story of migration, community and identity – inspired by the famous monarch butterfly, which travels thousands of kilometres every year.
The story is based, among other things, on Irving, a member of the Bluetile team who moved from Veracruz in Mexico to South Carolina and is now part of the local skate community. It is precisely this sense of journey, new beginnings and belonging that the sneaker reflects.
Visually, the Dunk features a dark upper in black leather with contrasting Campfire Orange details and bold Marina Blue Swooshes. The colours are reminiscent of the monarch butterfly’s wings and, at the same time, the sunsets of Columbia, South Carolina. Particularly striking are the embroidered butterfly details on the heel and the special fuzzy laces, which echo the structure of the butterfly’s wings.
Additional details such as a kaleidoscope of monarch butterflies on the insole, the South Carolina flag on the tongue and hidden messages beneath the Nike SB branding make the release even more personal. Despite the strong storytelling, the Dunk remains absolutely wearable and offers a clean yet eye-catching colourway for the summer.
