With the P400, New Balance is ushering in a new era of basketball and bidding farewell to previous models such as the Fresh Foam BB. Instead of a futuristic design, the brand has deliberately opted for a throwback look that is strongly reminiscent of early 2000s basketball trainers – including comparisons to the Reebok Question.

The ‘Permafrost’ colourway perfectly underscores this approach. High-quality leather dominates the upper, complemented by suede details on the collar. This ensures a premium look, even if it does make the shoe slightly heavier than many modern performance models.

In terms of performance, the P400 delivers solid basics: a cushioned midsole for comfort, a sturdy rubber outsole for traction, and sufficient stability for various playing styles. However, first impressions also suggest that the shoe has a slightly narrow fit and doesn’t quite match top models in terms of traction.
