574, 990v6, 1906R or 2002R: whilst other trainers brands give their models memorable names, New Balance has traditionally relied on numbers. What seems complicated at first glance was originally based on a clear system. The model number was intended to provide information about the product category, intended use and technical specifications of a shoe.
Nowadays, however, this principle no longer applies to every model. Particularly in the case of lifestyle trainers, retro releases and newly developed hybrids, the numbers often serve simply to categorise the model within a specific family.

How does the New Balance numbering system work?
A complete New Balance product number may consist of letters, a three- or four-digit model number and an additional colour code. For example, a style code such as ‘U9060BLK’ contains several pieces of information:
Other commonly used letters include ‘M’ for men, ‘W’ for women and ‘K’ for children. The designations may vary depending on the product category, market and year of release.
What do the last two digits mean?
The classic numbering system was developed primarily for performance and running shoes. The last two digits indicate the intended use:
40: offering a high level of control and stability
50: versatile fitness and training models
60: stability trainers
70: lighter stability models
80: neutral running shoes with plenty of cushioning
For example, the New Balance 860 is designed as a stable running shoe, whilst the 1080 belongs to the neutral and heavily cushioned category.
However, there are exceptions to this classification. Despite its model number, the New Balance 990 does not belong to the classic ‘speed’ category. Many current lifestyle trainers also follow the traditional classification only to a limited extent, if at all.

Does a higher number automatically mean a better shoe?
Historically, higher model numbers often indicated more sophisticated technologies, higher-quality materials or a higher position within the range. A model from the 900 or 1000 series was therefore usually positioned above many cheaper ranges.

Nowadays, however, a higher number does not automatically mean that a trainer is better, newer or more comfortable. Although models such as the 1906R and 2002R have four-digit numbers, they follow a different design philosophy to a 990 or 1500. What matters is the specific construction, the technologies used and the intended purpose.
The small ‘v’ stands for ‘version’. The New Balance 990v6 is therefore the sixth fundamental iteration of the 990. With each new version, the upper, cushioning, fit and sole construction may change.
The 990v3, 990v4 and 990v6 are therefore not simply different colourways of the same shoe, but distinct stages of development. Earlier versions remain popular nonetheless and are regularly re-released.

Models such as the 991, 992 and 993 should be distinguished from these. They belong to the well-known 99X family, but have their own distinct silhouettes and are not simply further versions of the 990.
What does the ‘R’ stand for in the 2002R and 1906R?
In models such as the 2002R and 1906R, the additional ‘R’ indicates a modernised reissue. New Balance combines the design of older running trainers with a modified sole construction.

The 2002R, for example, is based on the original New Balance 2002. When it was re-released in 2020, the redesigned upper was combined with the outsole of the 860v2. A similar principle is used in the 1906R.
However, the ‘R’ is not a universal code that necessarily has the same meaning for every New Balance model.

An overview of popular New Balance models
New Balance 574

The 2002R draws on the technical running aesthetic of the early 2000s. The model combines a multi-panel upper made of mesh and suede with the sole construction of the 860v2. Are New Balance model numbers still important today?
The numbers continue to help distinguish between models and product families. However, they no longer function as a universal key. The historical system is particularly evident in performance running shoes, whilst lifestyle models often use their number as a name in its own right.
Anyone looking to choose between a 574, 990, 1906R and 2002R should therefore look beyond the number alone. These days, fit, materials, cushioning, origin and intended use usually reveal more about a New Balance trainer than its model number alone.
