Why is grey so characteristic of New Balance?

Grey trainers are as much a part of New Balance as the large ‘N’ on the side. But how did such an understated colour, of all things, become the brand’s trademark? The answer lies in the brand’s running heritage: in trainers designed for the city, for tarmac, and in a design choice that New Balance has stuck with for decades.

The story begins on the road

New Balance traces the origins of its grey running shoes back to 1980: the 620 model, which was developed for runners on paved roads. Whilst white and bold colours dominated the design of many sports shoes, the brand forged its own path with grey.

The connection to the surroundings was a deliberate choice. Grey complemented concrete and tarmac, and thus the routes on which the shoes were worn. New Balance describes the colour as a practical choice for urban runners, which gradually evolved into a defining feature of the brand.

The 990 made grey a classic

An important milestone followed in 1982 with the first New Balance 990. The running shoe was released in a subtle shade of grey and cost as much as 100 US dollars at the time. It was developed with the aim of creating the best possible running shoe from a technical perspective.

Over the following generations, the construction, cushioning and shape evolved. Grey remained a recurring reference point. Anyone looking at different versions of the 990 side by side can therefore see both the evolution of the range and its design continuity.

Why grey trainers seem so versatile

It’s easy to see when putting outfits together that grey works well even outside of running. With blue jeans, a grey trainer looks understated; with black trousers, it creates a softer contrast than bright white. Harmonious combinations can also be put together with beige, navy or olive.

That said, grey by no means implies that every shoe looks the same. The shade appears different on a rough suede surface than it does on airy mesh or smooth, reflective details. Variations in brightness make individual panels stand out without the need for strong colour contrasts. This is why it’s particularly worth taking a closer look at materials and shades, especially with multi-part trainer designs.

A colour with high recognition value

From a design perspective, this holds a particular appeal: a subtle colour can become very memorable when it is used consistently. At New Balance, grey serves as a unifying element across different models and generations.

The brand itself associates the colour with versatility, durability and its independent ethos. Grey has therefore long been a deliberately cultivated part of its history.

What lies behind the Grey Days

With its annual ‘Grey Days’, New Balance dedicates a separate series of events and products to its signature colour. Special editions, stories and campaigns explore the connection between grey and the brand.

In this context, the colour serves as a common starting point for different designs: a classically shaped trainer and a high-tech-looking model may look different, yet still tell the same story – that of a running shoe whose colour suited the city and ultimately helped shape an entire brand.

The 990v7 continues the legacy in grey

The Made in USA 990v7, due to be released on 6 November 2026, demonstrates just how closely grey remains linked to the evolution of New Balance. The new generation launches in the colourway ‘Kool Grey/Calcium/Light Arctic Grey’, thus paying homage to the grey origins of the 990 range. Mesh and suede are complemented by accents of grained leather; a revised silhouette and a full-length FuelCell midsole with two different densities take the model to the next level.

This release is a prime example of the history of New Balance grey: form, materials and technology evolve, whilst the colour creates a visible link between the generations. With the 990v7, you can see first-hand how a familiar trademark lends its characteristic expression to a new design. For further details, click on the link and check out the trainer.
