Ibn Jasper x Converse Pro Leather Reminiscent of Julius Erving’s Style
Julius Erving, aka Dr. J, was one of the most famous players ever in the history of basketball and one of the shortest (being only 2.01 meters tall), yet best forwards in the NBA. His high jumps were legendary. You could almost think that Dr. J's territory was out of reach for the rest of the other players. The ex-basketball player further cemented his place in basketball history with his iconic style wearing Converse's Pro Leather sneakers during his games.
Converse first released the Converse Pro Leather in 1976. At that time, Julius Erving was sold to the Philadelphia 76ers. Consequently, the Converse basketball shoe was one of the most popular sneakers back then. Today, Ibn Jasper pays homage to Dr. J's broad influence in basketball as well as his unique play with the Ibn Jasper x Converse Pro Leather.
Ibn Jasper says, “This special collaboration has meant a lot to me since I was born in the '70s and raised in the '80s to see all the great NBA players like Dr. J.. The aesthetics of the shoe are based on a photo of Dr. J. entering the arena in a pure white outfit. He looks as if he just came off the catwalk. I thought to myself: ‘How can I bring this picture and the mood into a collection?’”
The young designer has perfectly given shape to this picture in the Ibn Jasper x Converse Pro Leather. The sneakers come in a white shade and are made of leather and suede overlays. Other noteworthy details are the lace lock with an embossed "1976" that commemorates the release year of the shoe, a zipper in between the laces, and the year "1984" in Roman numerals on the collar. Right now, we can't say exactly what it stands for, but we suspect it represents the year the legendary brawl between Julius Erving and Larry Bird took place.
