Nike Air Safari
The Nike Air Safari was first released in 1987. Tinker Hatfield wanted to introduce the safari print, but didn't know exactly how at the time. Countless ideas were collected and combined.

"I had this feeling of luxury and comfort and the idea of making an athletic shoe deliberately not athletic seemed good," Hatfield says. So Hatfield was sure of his conviction and put his idea on paper, but until then he did not know what materials the sneaker would be constructed from.

History of the Sneaker

So Tinker Hatfield boarded a plane to New York City and was immediately drawn into the spell of a furniture shop. But it was a very specific couch that was in the shop window that motivated him to enter the shop. Immediately, he was inspired and knew what the Nike Air Safari should look like in reality. "Even before they could throw me out of the shop, I had fallen hopelessly in love with this couch. I was fascinated by the fact that this couch was so fabulous just because of the material it was covered in." The couch itself was covered in ostrich leather and Hatfield just had to find a faux version of that material to bring the Nike Air Safari to life. And as we can see, the Nike Air Safari has become something truly great.

So now the Nike Air Safari could finally become a reality. But there were some teething problems at the beginning, because many people were not really convinced by the idea. The Nike Air Safari was then released for the first time with the Air Pack. Four different models, the Air Max 1, Air Trainer I, Air Sock and the Air Safari were launched. So now the Nike Air Safari has been around for a few years and is still going strong. It is popular and definitely still a nice eye-catcher.

Materials of the Nike Air Safari

Of course, one thing is immediately obvious about the Nike Air Safari. The upper with its safari print. This print was Tinker's interpretation of ostrich leather and was a unique new design aesthetic that set the Air Safari apart from any sneaker in 1987. In addition, the traditional mesh components were replaced with leather. Here, it was once again made clear that the Nike Air Safari was not designed for performance, but also for design. Although it is "running-inspired", it is still not a typical running shoe.

An EVA midsole was used for the midsole, which was able to ensure comfort, along with the Nike Air. This makes the sneaker not only comfortable, but also offers perfect cushioning for the foot.

Even though it was met with a lot of resistance in the beginning, Hatfield was able to convince with his safari print and the Nike Air Safari has become a significant sneaker in the sneaker game.

Conclusion on the Nike Air Safari

So what can one say about it? Clearly, this is a sneaker with class and a lot of idea. The Nike Air Safari is not a typical running shoe, as has mainly been the case with Nike up to now. The Nike Air Safari was the first sneaker that was inspired by running, but mainly focused on design and class.
